October was a vibrant month for SAC and the Mackenzie community, brimming with spirit, culture, delicious food and giving back. We kicked off the month with our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, successfully supporting the North York Harvest Food Bank. Special congratulations to Ms. Spiliopoulous' class for bringing in the most donations and earning a pizza party 🍕🥳!
In recognition of World Mental Health Day, our Equity Reps raised awareness about mental health challenges in hopes of reducing stigma ❤️🩹🧘💚🫂. As the weather cooled, our Spirit Reps hosted a morning hot chocolate sale, warming hearts and boosting morale throughout the Mackenzie community ☕🤎.
To celebrate the Spooky Season, SAC organized a fun Candygram sale 🍬🏷️ . A highlight of the month was our Spirit Week, featuring daily themed outfits like Jersey Day and Twin Day. The culmination of the festivities was Mactoberfest on Halloween, which included culturally diverse food sales by various clubs, a spooky photo booth, thrilling stage show, and even an inflatable adventure ✨🎤📸🎆
Thank you to everyone who participated in our initiatives and helped contribute to the vibrancy of the school community in October! 🍂☕️🍁🎃
Your Student Council 💌🦁
September was an exciting and eventful month for the student council as we kicked off the school year with several key activities aimed at fostering school spirit and community engagement. Our first major excitement of the year was welcoming everyone back on the first day of school. We were so happy to see new and old faces alike, setting such a positive tone for the year ahead.
Grade 9 Day followed shortly after, and it was a blast! Student Council organized a fun icebreaker-filled day out on the field with activities to help the new high schoolers get to know one another and feel more comfortable here at Mac!
Later in the month, SAC took on the task of painting the bulletin boards, a creative initiative that allowed us to refresh the details of our hallway! On these bulletin boards, we cannot wait to highlight school pride and share important messages.
To honour National Day of Reconciliation, we hosted Orange Shirt Day and our equity representatives screened the movie Beans, facilitating important conversations around reconciliation and the experiences of Indigenous peoples.
It was a month full of collaboration, creativity, and community building! Thank you for everything and we cannot wait to share more of SAC’s plans for the month ahead… Stay tuned by following our Instagram @wlmac.sac and follow the Lyon’s life on @wlmac.lyon. Feel free to reach out with questions or suggestions– SAC serve YOU!
With love,
Your Student Council

Dearest Mackenzie,
These past few years have been full of change, but if that has taught us anything, it’s that we must initiate our own positive change. The Lyon, Mac’s official newspaper and oldest club, is back and ready to make some big changes. We'd love to have interested writers and designers join our team. Come to Room 218 next Monday at lunch to hear about our plans, hopes, and applications.

Attention citizens of Mackenzie! Coming soon is the Student Vote for the upcoming Provincial Election and guess whose opinion will be voiced? Yours!
Student Vote is an opportunity for youth, aka soon-to-be adults, to exercise their right to vote. Voting itself entails understanding where your responsibility is coming from, where it’s going, and why. Thus, to help you, on Thursday, May 12 after school from 4 to 5pm, there will be a virtual all-candidates panel to inform you about the various party platforms. Are you interested in seeing who has your best interests at heart? Come pop in to hear the initiatives and intent of the people for whom your vote can make a difference. Stay tuned for details!
In the meanwhile, you can also submit questions to be asked by the presenting candidates at the panel, as well as your rating on the issues the provincial government is charged with managing: healthcare, education, the environment, and the economy. https://forms.gle/EVhFfPaJZrHfkaVw8
The form will close on Monday at 11:59pm so get your responses in ASAP!

We’ve all experienced small comments aimed our way that intentionally or unintentionally hurt us and make us feel uncomfortable in our skin. These are all examples of something called microaggressions. Microaggressions are instances of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group. Despite what the micro- may have you believe, these incidences can have a huge impact on the mental health and well-being of marginalized populations. Attend our Let’s Talk Now Meeting at lunch this Thursday in room 215 to learn more about these impacts and how they can be minimized! Everyone is welcome!

HEY MAC! SAC here with more updates for Grade 9 Day:
1.Grade 9 Day will run on Friday, Sep. 24
The weather is supposed to be nice, but it can get chilly - so make sure to dress accordly. All teachers were sent an email which includes the starting station and the class theme - we encourage all Grade 9's to dress up! (hint hint nudge nudge, there are extra points for the most spirited/dressed up class!) At the end of lunch please proceed to your Friday afternoon class for attendance. Your class will visit each station together in 10 minute rotations and we cannot mix cohorts, so please STAY WITH YOUR CLASS. We ask that you are at your start station at 12:30.
2. Grade 12 Volunteers
You will be excused from class starting at 9:30 am until 2:45 pm. Once you're excused proceed to the LIBRARY, so we can have a quick meeting before we start setting up. An email will be sent later today to ensure that everyone knows what they're doing. Please familiarize yourself with your activity prior to Friday, all of the supplies will be provided, and if you have any questions you can reach out to us on Instagram (@wlmac.sac )!
3. Virtual Grade 9 Day
Virtual grade 9s, don't worry we didn't forget about you! We prepared a special virtual grade 9 day which will run silmultaneously with the in-person one. A zoom link will be sent out to all grade 9 teachers to share with their virtual students. Attendance will be taken so make sure to join in. We planned exciting games, exclusive prizes and lots of SPIRIT!
