Hey Mac! Transgender Awareness Week occurs each year between November 13-19 with the goal of helping increase understanding about transgender people and the issues members of the community face. Throughout the week, transgender people and their allies take action to educate the public about who transgender people are, while sharing experiences and increasing advocacy around issues of discrimination and violence that affect the community. Transgender Awareness week falls right before Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 which is an annual observance that honors transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of transphobic violence that year.
Gardening Club is having its monthly fundraiser for more picnic tables for our school's back gardens for all to enjoy. Our sale is November 11th-14th, 2024 in the school store before school, lunch time and after school. Thank you all for supporting our initiatives.
October was a vibrant month for SAC and the Mackenzie community, brimming with spirit, culture, delicious food and giving back. We kicked off the month with our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, successfully supporting the North York Harvest Food Bank. Special congratulations to Ms. Spiliopoulous' class for bringing in the most donations and earning a pizza party ππ₯³!
In recognition of World Mental Health Day, our Equity Reps raised awareness about mental health challenges in hopes of reducing stigma β€οΈπ©Ήπ§ππ«. As the weather cooled, our Spirit Reps hosted a morning hot chocolate sale, warming hearts and boosting morale throughout the Mackenzie community βπ€.
To celebrate the Spooky Season, SAC organized a fun Candygram sale π¬π·οΈ . A highlight of the month was our Spirit Week, featuring daily themed outfits like Jersey Day and Twin Day. September was an exciting and eventful month for the student council as we kicked off the school year with several key activities aimed at fostering school spirit and community engagement. Our first major excitement of the year was welcoming everyone back on the first day of school. We were so happy to see new and old faces alike, setting such a positive tone for the year ahead.
Grade 9 Day followed shortly after, and it was a blast! Student Council organized a fun icebreaker-filled day out on the field with activities to help the new high schoolers get to know one another and feel more comfortable here at Mac!
Later in the month, SAC took on the task of painting the bulletin boards, a creative initiative that allowed us to refresh the details of our hallway! On these bulletin boards, we cannot wait to highlight school pride and share important messages.
To honour National Day of Reconciliation, we hosted Orange Shirt Day and our equity representatives screened the movie Beans, facilitating important conversations around reconciliation and the experiences of Indigenous peoples.
It was a month full of collaboration, creativity, and community building! Thank you for everything and we cannot wait to share more of SACβs plans for the month aheadβ¦ Stay tuned by following our Instagram @wlmac.sac and follow the Lyonβs life on @wlmac.lyon. Feel free to reach out with questions or suggestionsβ SAC serve YOU!
With love,
Your Student Council
