Hey MAC!!
Before we dive into the warmer weather and spring season, SAC wants to highlight the incredibly fun, spirited and community-building hockey buyout we hosted on February 27th. Our very own Mackenzie Lyons took on Earl Haig Secondary School in an exciting matchup. Over 100 WLMAC students and teachers showed up to support our LYON athletes on the ice and we raised over $1000 for the Right to Play charity organization ❄️🏒
It was a highly thrilling and competitive match, full of cheering, face paint and an undeniable amount of school spirit. The energy and spirit throughout the community was truly infectious. We are proud to share that our LYONS emerged victorious after showcasing an incredible sense of talent, teamwork, grit and dedication. 🙌🦁
The hockey buyout was a true reflection of the high calibre of our LYON coaches and athletes and an incredible celebration of the spirit and sportsmanship throughout our community. 🥅Ⓜ️🏒
SAC is looking forward to our upcoming MAC’s Got Talent event and May spirit week, so make sure to stay tuned for what’s to come as we enter Spring! 💝🌼💐🌟🌙

Welcome back to your favourite once in a while athletic review! Let’s see what’s going on with sports and Mackenzie!
Volleyball:
When you place the 3 boys and 3 girls from Mackenzie’s amazing volleyball teams, there’s practically no team that can stop them. You know it’s a bit of a slaughter when the game barely lasts half an hour… For the last game of the season, a couple of Mackenzie’s players seemed to have to leave early as they barrelled the volleyball onto Downsviews court over and over. With a convincing score of 25-06 and 25-06, fans were able to watch a game, and still catch their bus to go home! And with that win, Mackenzie’s Co-Ed volleyball team goes into the quarterfinals undefeated!
Track and Field:
Posted on wlmac.athletics on instagram on May 13th:

Soccer:
Rain, rain, go away
Come again some other day
We want to go outside and play
Come again some other day
The varsity girls soccer team absolutely loved the muddy conditions for their game against Earl Haig! With mud, hair, and cleats flying everywhere, the team ran onto the field on this nice sunny afternoon. With some great team work and some amazing individual effort, the team was able to pull out a fairly convincing 5-2! Great work girls!
Baseball:
Tier 1:
The boys came out to play against one of Mackenzie’s biggest rivals: York Mills. They played hard, but sadly fell short to YMCI’s quick plays and hard hits. The final score of the game was 1-5, nice try boys!
Tier 2:
The tier 2 team on the other hand had a field day. The boys played against Emery and they decided to show no mercy to the lesser experienced team. The boys scored run after run against the run-less Emery team. The ending score was a blowout 14 - 0 win for Mackenzie.
Final Game Scores:
WLMCI vs. DSS (Co-Ed Volleyball): | 25 - 06 | 25 - 07 |
WLMCI vs. EHSS (Varsity Girls Soccer): | 5 - 2 |
WLMCI vs. YMCI(Tier 1 Boys Baseball): | 1 - 5|
WLMCI vs. ECI (Tier 2 Boys Baseball): | 14 - 0|

Welcome back to the not-so-biweekly athletic highlights! Congratulations to everyone for finishing their exams! Additionally, let's congratulate everyone who went outside recently (specifically Leyang Zou)! Keep up the great work! Nonetheless, let’s see what’s happening in Mackenzie’s sports, shall we?
Volleyball:
With the pools stage over, the girls come to stomp their competition just as they had in their pools!
The Junior team kicked off the double header against Sir John A. Macdonald for their quarterfinal game, and it was just a stomp. I don’t think that many words need to be said for this game, just take a peek at the score at the bottom of this page to see how it went. With such an easy win, the Junior girls team came to win the semi-finals game against Northview SS! The girls came out with a strong fiery blaze with close points in the first few points, but sadly lost steam through the set and were unable to pick themselves up after their first set loss. The girls ended their season with a 0 - 2 loss to NHSS, but they will be coming back next year with some of the girls destined for next year’s senior team!
The Senior girls had a similar experience against Macdonald’s team. Just a stomp, you can see the scores at the bottom. Although, the next game against Lawrence Park CI was definitely a game to watch. The senior girls came out with a VERY slow start, and swiftly lost a first set with a score of 8 - 25. The girls were able to pull themselves together for the second set, but sadly were continually contested at the net for another lost set with a score of 21 - 25. Thankfully, the set was a best of 5 and the girls would have to win the next 3 sets in a row to win the match. Luckily, everyone in the crowd collectively decided that they would look away for the first 2 sets. With one long rally after another, Mackenzie was able to tire out their opponents and really have their skill shine through. The senior girls were able to pull off a reverse sweep with an ending score of 3 sets to 2, in a very convincing fashion (25 - 14, 25 - 19, 15 - 12). Keeping the momentum going, the girls quickly swept the other finalists, York Mills, in 3 sets in the regional finals! Congratulations to the senior girls team for becoming the North Region Champions! Sadly, the girls were not able to continue further in city finals. Nice try Lyons!
Ski/Snowboard:
Posted on wlmac.athletics on the 13th:
On the 7th, the varsity ski & snowboard team competed in their second official race of the season! Again, athletes had to battle against challenging conditions: hail and freezing rain. Overall, we had 2 podium performances, with an OUTSTANDING 2nd place finish by Caitlin Davies in the level 2 W-slalom, and a 3rd place finish by Jacob Stotland in the level 1 M-slalom.
Varsity Boys Hockey
With the Varsity Boys Hockey team approaching playoffs, the team looks to sharpen their skills in their last pool game! Mackenzie squared off against York Mills CI’s hockey team and started off confident while coming from a convincing 7 - 3 win against Sir John A. Macdonald’s team. Sadly, the team was not able to pick up steam as York Mills scored 2 goals without any in return.
Final Game Scores:
WLMCI vs. SJAM (Junior Girls Volleyball): | 25 - 05 | 25 - 15 |
WLMCI vs. NHSS (Junior Girls Volleyball): | 12 - 25 | 11 - 25 |
WLMCI vs. LPCI (Senior Girls Volleyball): | 08 - 25 | 21 - 25 | 25 - 14 | 25 - 19| 15 - 12 |
WLMCI vs. LPCI (Senior Girls Volleyball): | 25 - 12 | 25 - 16 | 25 - 16 |
WLMCI vs. RCI (Senior Girls Volleyball): | 25 - 18 | 23 - 25 | 23 - 25 | 9 - 25|
WLMCI vs. YMCI(Varsity Boys Hockey): 0 - 2

With the conclusion of Fall sports, Mackenzie’s Winter sports start their engines!
Notable Fall Sports Achievements:
Sr. Boys Volleyball - Regional Finalists
Varsity Girls Basketball - Regional Finalists
Cross Country - OFSAA qualification
Jr. Boys Soccer - Regional Semi-Finalists
Golf team: 4th Overall North Region Team, OFSAA qualification (Jessica Chen)
No Name - Dodgeball Intramural Champions
Volleyball:
Meh, the Senior Girls Volleyball team is doing well or whatever… The girls pulled out two very close wins against AY Jackson and Emery CI. The first game against AY Jackson ended with the girls winning 25 - 8, and the second set ended with the girls also winning 25 - 4. Like I said, very close. The second game against Emery ended with a nail-biting 25 - 10 in the first set, and a 25 - 12 in the second set. Kidding aside, the Senior Girls volleyball team is killing the competition! If you want specific details for their games, tune in for their next games! Or if that isn’t for you, feel free to read up on them in the local obituary statements from the other teams!
The Junior Girls are doing just as well as the Senior girls, winning their first game against Emery CI! The first set had some rough areas where the girls had to shake off some of their first game jitters, but they pulled themselves together and were able to have a fairly dominant win over the other team with an ending score of 25 - 18 in the first set, and 25 - 15 in the second set! Good job girls!
Basketball:
The Senior and Juniors Boys basketball teams kicked it off with two exciting home games!
The Senior Boys had a slow game against Northview. Mackenzie was not able to consistently get through Northview’s defenses, and Northview was able to counterattack after to score their points. After a lot of back and forth, the Lyon’s slowly bled points and ended the game 30 - 53. A second home game was played against Westview Centennial SS. The team suffered from the same problems where they traded points, but slowly bled out some points here and there. The team showed much improvement from the last game, but sadly ended with the score 49 - 60. The teamwork and communication between the boys is still developing, so we hope to see their hard work start to pay off soon!
The Junior boys came out swinging with a win against Northview Height SS. The boys came out swinging, with the tempo mostly in their favour. With spirits high, and the crowd loud, the boys were able to win with a convincing score of 44 - 33. The second game against Westview Centennial was a very close one. The boys came with the same high intensity from their previous win, and played very well against their formidable opponents. The boys played very well individually, as well as a team and were able to pull out a very close win with a score of 44 - 40.
Final Game Scores:
WLMCI vs. ECI (Junior Girls Volleyball): | 25 - 18 | 25 - 15 |
WLMCI vs. AYJSS (Senior Girls Volleyball): | 25 - 8 | 25 - 4 |
WLMCI vs. ECI (Senior Girls Volleyball): | 25 - 10 | 25 - 12 |
WLMCI vs. NHSS (Junior Boys Basketball): | 44 - 33 |
WLMCI vs. WCSS (Junior Boys Basketball): | 44 - 40 |
WLMCI vs. NHSS (Senior Boys Basketball): | 30 - 53 |
WLMCI vs. WCSS (Senior Boys Basketball): | 49 - 60 |

Whoops, this is a bit late! This is for the weeks of **Oct 24th - Nov 4th **
It’s time for SPORTS!!!! WOW!
Volleyball:
“If there’s a late start, then there’s a guaranteed practice that morning.” - Senior Boys Volleyball team.
With the pool stage over, the boys volleyball teams have been putting in some intense work!
The Senior team played off against Northview in their quarterfinals, with their previous two games in the pools stage both ending in a Mackenzie win. The game started off with a bang as the Lyons’ scored point after point. They ended the set with an impressive 25 - 11 set win. After the first set, it seems like the team fell into a hole. Trading point after point, the Lyons were not able to get traction in the first half of the set. Down by 6 points at one section of the set, they needed to get their stuff together. With a newfound source of motivation after a tactical timeout, the Lyons’ came back swinging with a comeback mid-set to get a 24 - 20 lead. After another twist of events, 4 points in a row were lost, and the set went into a deuce. Down 25 - 26, Mackenzie was able to stick their heels into the ground and sneak through a couple of consecutive points with a 28 - 26 win. The seniors will go on to face Victoria Park next week in the regional semi-finals!
The Junior team traveled to Sir John A. Macdonald CI to play against their junior team for their quarterfinals game. The game started out rather slow with SJAM playing well and leading throughout the game. The juniors weren’t able to put together a strong offense to pressure SJAM’s strong defense and ended the first set 12 - 25. Coming into the second set the Lyons came out a little slow, but quickly picked up the pace as the set went on. Sadly, the junior team barely fell short in a very close second set loss 23 - 25. This was the last game of the junior’s season. The team will rebuild even stronger next year!
Basketball:
The varsity girl’s basketball team played two games in the past week for the last game in their pool stage, and the quarterfinals. I’ve run out of words to describe just how dominant the team is so I will just be reading some words from the Thesaurus: assertive, commanding, effective, leading, etc. The girls are doing outstandingly with an undefeated record, with game scores that show just how commanding they really are. Their final pool game against Emery was won 38 - 21, and their quarterfinals game against Victoria Park was won 43 - 24. Keep it up girls!
Soccer:
Two weeks ago the junior and senior soccer teams squared off against George Vanier SS.
The juniors played at GVSS two weeks ago. They came out ready to play after their very intense goalless game against Northview in the previous week. The juniors played a hard fought game in the cold rainy day, but they sadly were not able to pull out a win over GVSS with a 2 - 3 loss.
Cross Country:
Update from before OFSAA:
The Mackenzie Cross Country Team raced in the North/East Regional Finals at Sunnybrook Park on Wednesday. Mackenzie was only two points away from the overall championship winners, placing second to York Mills!
Mackenzie had fantastic results with many top-10 performances, many City Final qualifiers, and lots of top-team performances. The cross country team will compete at the City Finals on Monday (Oct. 24) at Sunnybrook Park with the goal to qualify for OFSAA.
Novice Girls North 2nd Place Champions (49 pts.):
Laila Vloet - 3rd

Heyyyy MAC!
WOW! Sports! Here are some of the highlights from some of Mackenzie's sport teams this week!
Volleyball:
It was a fairly busy week for Boys Volleyball despite the short week.
The Junior and Senior Boys traveled to Emery last Wednesday to play against them in a double header.
The juniors played first with a slow start up. They sadly lost the first set 18 to 25 with one too many dropped balls. The Lyons came back swinging with early momentum in the second set, only to get caught up in a slow second half of slowly losing their lead through the trading of points. Emery was able to pull ahead at the last second to barely steal away a win with a score of 23 - 25.
The seniors had ice in their veins coming into their game due to their previous game being too close for comfort. Nothing was held back. The seniors slaughtered Emery in the first set with a clean 25 - 14 victory. Emery came back swinging in the second set, but they were not able to seal the deal as the Lyons had the momentum from the first set and the Lyons won with a 25 - 19 win.
Later on in the week, the volleyball teams went out and participated in the Danforth CI centennial tournament that was hosted at Danforth CI and Monarch Park!
The juniors travelled out on Thursday, determined to win. Unfortunately, it seemed that their determination was not enough. Through many close sets, the Juniors were not able to pick up enough wins to move out of the pools stage. Despite not doing too well, the juniors were able to learn some valuable new lessons as the teams at the tournament were some of the best in the TDSB. Let’s hope that we can see some of their new skills in their upcoming games!
Lost in the jail-like maze of Danforth CI, the seniors slowly funneled into the third gym for their 8am game against Northern CI. The senior team came to a very chaotic start as they lost all of their volleyballs to the basketball net, and spectator stands. With no balls to warm-up with, they borrowed Northern’s. With a rather unfortunate serving streak for the other team in the middle of the set, the Lyons were not able to make up the points and lost the first set 19 - 25. The second set was looking rather grim just like the first one with many of the early points going to Northern. After a very inspiring speech from Mr.Hua in a strategic time out, Mackenzie came back with a new fire in their hearts winning the set 25 - 18! With only two sets in the pools stage, Mackenzie won the split by 1 point due to only giving away 18 points, to Northern’s 19 points!
The senior team went on to win the rest of their pool comfortably, and establish themselves within the top 8 teams in the tournament! Sadly, they weren’t able to win their quarter finals game in a tight loss to Humberside, but they’ll use the knowledge they gained from playing a great team, apply it to their regular season, and hopefully get to play Humberside again!
Basketball:
The varsity girls basketball team had a game against CW Jeffrey’s this past Wednesday at Mackenzie. The first few points were fairly even with each team scoring a couple. Within the blink of an eye, the Lyons turned up the heat and continued to score while keeping CWJ away from their own basket. The Lyons were able to win with a dominating score of 47 - 17. Keep up the good work girls!
Soccer:
Mackenzie’s junior boys soccer team played against York Mills last Tuesday at Mackenzie. The Lyons were ready to play after their canceled game the week before. Sadly, York Mills’ team was just as ready. Despite the Lyon's best efforts, York Mills’ team play was better than expected, and Mackenzie lost 0 - 5.
Later on in the week, the junior boys traveled to Westview to play against Westview’s team. Remembering their previous loss, the Lyons came with a newfound determination and grit. With amazing team play, and great effort from all players, the team was able to win a crushing game against Westview with a 5 - 0 score.
Final Game Scores:
WLMCI vs. ECI (Junior Boys Volleyball): | 18 - 25 | 23 - 25 |
WLMCI vs. ECI (Senior Boys Volleyball): | 25 - 14 | 25 - 19 |
WLMCI vs. CWJ (Varsity Girls Basketball): 47 - 17
WLMCI vs. YMCI (Junior Boys Soccer): 0 - 5
WLMCI vs. WCSS (Junior Boys Soccer): 5 - 0
Stay tuned for next week’s home games:
Oct 17th:
Varsity Girls Basketball vs. Westview
Junior Boys Soccer vs. SJAM
Senior Boys Soccer vs. SJAM
Oct 19th:

Heyyyy MAC!
This week was a big week for Mackenzie’s athletics! Here are some of the highlights!
Volleyball:
The Junior and Senior Boys volleyball teams came out swinging for their double header against Westview this past Tuesday!
Mackenzie’s Senior team stormed the court with their confidence and team spirit right from the get-go. They started off strong with 9 straight points, 7 of which were service aces. The first set was rather short lived, as Mackenzie took their momentum from their earlier points to absolutely steamroll their opponents winning the set with a score of 25 - 6, and cleanly win another set 25 - 14.
Mackenzie’s Junior team had a rough start by losing the first set 20 - 25. Points were continually traded, and Mackenzie wasn’t able to create a comfortable lead. In the second set, the team was able to band together and play like a team which led to a very close second set with the final result in Mackenzie’s favour of 26 - 24. With a nail-biting set to 15, the Lyons were able to clutch up with a winning ace serve, ending the set with a 16 - 14 score!
Additionally, this past Thursday Mackenzie had another double header against DSS’s senior and junior volleyball teams!
The Seniors started out unfavourably, missing serves, letting the ball drop, and botching passes. Despite this, the Lyons were able to claw their way to a win in the first set with a close 25 - 22 score. In the second set, the team was able to slowly build up some tempo near the second half of the set and claim victory with a score of 25 - 18 in the second set!
The Juniors on the other hand, came ready to play! They easily scooped up a win in the first set with a score of 25 - 11. The second set was looking a bit grim in the first half, but the Lyons were able to pull through with a clutch comeback in the second half with an ending score of 26 - 24!
Basketball:
Mackenzie’s Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Newtonbrook to take on the Newtonbrook North Stars this past Wednesday! The girls kept a good tempo throughout the game with their excellent communication, and even better shots. The girls were on fire offensively, and were still able to get back to defend their basket to the same degree of effectiveness. With a dominating 33 point lead, Mackenzie won with a final score of 51 - 18!
Soccer:
The Senior Boys Soccer team travelled to Downsview this past Wednesday to play against their team. They fought long and hard on the nice sunny day for victory, but they fell short and took a loss with a score of 1 - 2. The boys will have their next game on October 11th, and they definitely will bring their A-game to secure the win!
Cross Country:
After racing in the second last mini-meet of the season, the Lyons are going strong!
The team split up yesterday, attending two different meets with exceptional performances at both.
At G. Ross Lord Park:
Kyrie Savvaidis - 1st Place Novice Boys
Laila Vloet - 4th Place Novice Girls
Jaden Stewart - 2nd Place Junior Boys
At Boyd Conservation Area (Senior Boys):
Daniel Morgan - 4th Place
Jacob Stotland - 9th Place
Simon Drolet - 10th Place
And an outstanding team score for the Senior Boys. A total of 46 points
resulting in 2nd PLACE for the Lyons, only 4 points behind St. Michael's College and 84 points ahead of 3rd!
The Lyons will head to Centennial Park next week as the mini-meet season comes to an end.
Final Game Scores:
WLMCI vs. WCSS (Junior Boys Volleyball): | 20 - 25 | 26 - 24 | 16 - 14 |
WLMCI vs. DSS (Junior Boys Volleyball): | 25 - 11 | 26 - 24 |
WLMCI vs. WCSS (Senior Boys Volleyball): | 25 - 06 | 25 - 14|
WLMCI vs. DSS (Senior Boys Volleyball): | 25 - 22 | 25 - 18|
WLMCI vs. NSS (Varsity Girls Basketball): 51 - 18
