Whoops, this is a bit late! This is for the weeks of **Oct 24th - Nov 4th **
It’s time for SPORTS!!!! WOW!
“If there’s a late start, then there’s a guaranteed practice that morning.” - Senior Boys Volleyball team.
With the pool stage over, the boys volleyball teams have been putting in some intense work!
The Senior team played off against Northview in their quarterfinals, with their previous two games in the pools stage both ending in a Mackenzie win. The game started off with a bang as the Lyons’ scored point after point. They ended the set with an impressive 25 - 11 set win. After the first set, it seems like the team fell into a hole. Trading point after point, the Lyons were not able to get traction in the first half of the set. Down by 6 points at one section of the set, they needed to get their stuff together. With a newfound source of motivation after a tactical timeout, the Lyons’ came back swinging with a comeback mid-set to get a 24 - 20 lead. After another twist of events, 4 points in a row were lost, and the set went into a deuce. Down 25 - 26, Mackenzie was able to stick their heels into the ground and sneak through a couple of consecutive points with a 28 - 26 win. The seniors will go on to face Victoria Park next week in the regional semi-finals!
The Junior team traveled to Sir John A. Macdonald CI to play against their junior team for their quarterfinals game. The game started out rather slow with SJAM playing well and leading throughout the game. The juniors weren’t able to put together a strong offense to pressure SJAM’s strong defense and ended the first set 12 - 25. Coming into the second set the Lyons came out a little slow, but quickly picked up the pace as the set went on. Sadly, the junior team barely fell short in a very close second set loss 23 - 25. This was the last game of the junior’s season. The team will rebuild even stronger next year!
The varsity girl’s basketball team played two games in the past week for the last game in their pool stage, and the quarterfinals. I’ve run out of words to describe just how dominant the team is so I will just be reading some words from the Thesaurus: assertive, commanding, effective, leading, etc. The girls are doing outstandingly with an undefeated record, with game scores that show just how commanding they really are. Their final pool game against Emery was won 38 - 21, and their quarterfinals game against Victoria Park was won 43 - 24. Keep it up girls!
Two weeks ago the junior and senior soccer teams squared off against George Vanier SS.
The juniors played at GVSS two weeks ago. They came out ready to play after their very intense goalless game against Northview in the previous week. The juniors played a hard fought game in the cold rainy day, but they sadly were not able to pull out a win over GVSS with a 2 - 3 loss.
Update from before OFSAA:
The Mackenzie Cross Country Team raced in the North/East Regional Finals at Sunnybrook Park on Wednesday. Mackenzie was only two points away from the overall championship winners, placing second to York Mills!
Mackenzie had fantastic results with many top-10 performances, many City Final qualifiers, and lots of top-team performances. The cross country team will compete at the City Finals on Monday (Oct. 24) at Sunnybrook Park with the goal to qualify for OFSAA.
