This week was a big week for Mackenzie’s athletics! Here are some of the highlights!
The Junior and Senior Boys volleyball teams came out swinging for their double header against Westview this past Tuesday!
Mackenzie’s Senior team stormed the court with their confidence and team spirit right from the get-go. They started off strong with 9 straight points, 7 of which were service aces. The first set was rather short lived, as Mackenzie took their momentum from their earlier points to absolutely steamroll their opponents winning the set with a score of 25 - 6, and cleanly win another set 25 - 14.
Mackenzie’s Junior team had a rough start by losing the first set 20 - 25. Points were continually traded, and Mackenzie wasn’t able to create a comfortable lead. In the second set, the team was able to band together and play like a team which led to a very close second set with the final result in Mackenzie’s favour of 26 - 24. With a nail-biting set to 15, the Lyons were able to clutch up with a winning ace serve, ending the set with a 16 - 14 score!
Additionally, this past Thursday Mackenzie had another double header against DSS’s senior and junior volleyball teams!
The Seniors started out unfavourably, missing serves, letting the ball drop, and botching passes. Despite this, the Lyons were able to claw their way to a win in the first set with a close 25 - 22 score. In the second set, the team was able to slowly build up some tempo near the second half of the set and claim victory with a score of 25 - 18 in the second set!
The Juniors on the other hand, came ready to play! They easily scooped up a win in the first set with a score of 25 - 11. The second set was looking a bit grim in the first half, but the Lyons were able to pull through with a clutch comeback in the second half with an ending score of 26 - 24!
Mackenzie’s Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Newtonbrook to take on the Newtonbrook North Stars this past Wednesday! The girls kept a good tempo throughout the game with their excellent communication, and even better shots. The girls were on fire offensively, and were still able to get back to defend their basket to the same degree of effectiveness. With a dominating 33 point lead, Mackenzie won with a final score of 51 - 18!
The Senior Boys Soccer team travelled to Downsview this past Wednesday to play against their team. They fought long and hard on the nice sunny day for victory, but they fell short and took a loss with a score of 1 - 2. The boys will have their next game on October 11th, and they definitely will bring their A-game to secure the win!
After racing in the second last mini-meet of the season, the Lyons are going strong!
The team split up yesterday, attending two different meets with exceptional performances at both.
