Heyyyy MAC!

WOW! Sports! Here are some of the highlights from some of Mackenzie's sport teams this week!

Volleyball:

It was a fairly busy week for Boys Volleyball despite the short week.

The Junior and Senior Boys traveled to Emery last Wednesday to play against them in a double header.

The juniors played first with a slow start up. They sadly lost the first set 18 to 25 with one too many dropped balls. The Lyons came back swinging with early momentum in the second set, only to get caught up in a slow second half of slowly losing their lead through the trading of points. Emery was able to pull ahead at the last second to barely steal away a win with a score of 23 - 25.

The seniors had ice in their veins coming into their game due to their previous game being too close for comfort. Nothing was held back. The seniors slaughtered Emery in the first set with a clean 25 - 14 victory. Emery came back swinging in the second set, but they were not able to seal the deal as the Lyons had the momentum from the first set and the Lyons won with a 25 - 19 win.
Later on in the week, the volleyball teams went out and participated in the Danforth CI centennial tournament that was hosted at Danforth CI and Monarch Park!

The juniors travelled out on Thursday, determined to win. Unfortunately, it seemed that their determination was not enough. Through many close sets, the Juniors were not able to pick up enough wins to move out of the pools stage. Despite not doing too well, the juniors were able to learn some valuable new lessons as the teams at the tournament were some of the best in the TDSB. Let’s hope that we can see some of their new skills in their upcoming games!

Lost in the jail-like maze of Danforth CI, the seniors slowly funneled into the third gym for their 8am game against Northern CI. The senior team came to a very chaotic start as they lost all of their volleyballs to the basketball net, and spectator stands. With no balls to warm-up with, they borrowed Northern’s. With a rather unfortunate serving streak for the other team in the middle of the set, the Lyons were not able to make up the points and lost the first set 19 - 25. The second set was looking rather grim just like the first one with many of the early points going to Northern. After a very inspiring speech from Mr.Hua in a strategic time out, Mackenzie came back with a new fire in their hearts winning the set 25 - 18! With only two sets in the pools stage, Mackenzie won the split by 1 point due to only giving away 18 points, to Northern’s 19 points!

The senior team went on to win the rest of their pool comfortably, and establish themselves within the top 8 teams in the tournament! Sadly, they weren’t able to win their quarter finals game in a tight loss to Humberside, but they’ll use the knowledge they gained from playing a great team, apply it to their regular season, and hopefully get to play Humberside again!

Basketball:

The varsity girls basketball team had a game against CW Jeffrey’s this past Wednesday at Mackenzie. The first few points were fairly even with each team scoring a couple. Within the blink of an eye, the Lyons turned up the heat and continued to score while keeping CWJ away from their own basket. The Lyons were able to win with a dominating score of 47 - 17. Keep up the good work girls!

Soccer:

Mackenzie’s junior boys soccer team played against York Mills last Tuesday at Mackenzie. The Lyons were ready to play after their canceled game the week before. Sadly, York Mills’ team was just as ready. Despite the Lyon's best efforts, York Mills’ team play was better than expected, and Mackenzie lost 0 - 5.

Later on in the week, the junior boys traveled to Westview to play against Westview’s team. Remembering their previous loss, the Lyons came with a newfound determination and grit. With amazing team play, and great effort from all players, the team was able to win a crushing game against Westview with a 5 - 0 score.

Final Game Scores:

WLMCI vs. ECI (Junior Boys Volleyball): | 18 - 25 | 23 - 25 |
WLMCI vs. ECI (Senior Boys Volleyball): | 25 - 14 | 25 - 19 |
WLMCI vs. CWJ (Varsity Girls Basketball): 47 - 17
WLMCI vs. YMCI (Junior Boys Soccer): 0 - 5
