Since 2017/2018, Mackenzie's Gardening Club has established many structures at school, including transforming the front of the school into multiple flower beds and adding new park benches to make this space more functional and enjoyable. The Gardening Club intends to teach students how to grow and nurture a variety of plants, bushes and small trees. The club also aims to have Mackenzie's gardens serve as a place for relaxation and reconnecting with nature for everyone.
The Gardening Club has grown tremendously over the past 5 years, going from a couple of students that wanted to help Mrs. Nancy with gardening to a 20+ member club that works tirelessly to improve school grounds.
Since its creation, we've developed gardens that are pollinator-friendly and beautiful to look at. Below is a timeline of a few of our outstanding projects throughout the years:
At the moment, Gardening Club aims to add more native plants to our school's collection. This may be done through propagating plants we already have through collecting seeds in our gardens or running fundraisers to buy plants from nurseries.
We're also currently working on adding blooming bushes along the pathways at the back of the school near the current flower boxes. Additionally, gardening club members work diligently to maintain the pre-existing gardens to help maintain a friendly/welcoming environment for all to enjoy.
Furthermore, a major part of the Gardening Club is our fundraisers. At the moment, we are raising money for the gardens by selling plants we have for sale such as:
If interested in purchasing a plant, please see Mrs. Nancy. You can see her "Always in the hallways or working in the garden." :)
The Gardening Club hopes to install picnic tables for the back gardens to provide a space for students to eat lunch, study, or simply have a place to sit. If funds permit, we also wish to install three more flower boxes in the backfield across exit 3.
From the very beginning, Gardening Club could not have accomplished as much as we have without contributions from Mackenzie's staff and students. Whether it be through donating to the club or participating in our fundraisers/sales, we are truly grateful for everyone's support for the gardens as they helped us materialize all our goals from the past years.
Additionally, a special thank you goes to the Gardening Club members and staff supervisor. Gardening Club quite literally could not exist without our awesome staff supervisors Mrs. Nancy and Mr. Kvache, and the strong, hardworking members of the club. Thank you :D
